ADOPTION PROCESS

Your Journey to Bringing Home a Golden Paws Home Puppy

INTRODUCTION

Bringing a new puppy into your home is one of life’s most joyful experiences. At Golden Paws Home, we want that experience to be as wonderful and stress-free as possible. Our adoption process is designed to ensure that every puppy goes to a loving, prepared family and that every family receives a healthy, well-socialized puppy who will be their companion for years to come.

The process may seem detailed, but each step serves an important purpose. We encourage you to read through this page carefully so you understand exactly what to expect on your journey to bringing home your golden retriever puppy.

STEP 1: RESEARCH AND REFLECTION

Before you even submit an application, we encourage you to spend time researching golden retrievers and honestly assessing whether this breed is right for your family. Golden retrievers are wonderful dogs, but they are not the right fit for everyone.

Questions to Ask Yourself:

  • Do I have enough time to devote to a puppy? Puppies require significant time for training, socialization, exercise, and companionship.

  • Can I afford a dog? Beyond the initial purchase price, dogs require food, veterinary care, grooming, supplies, and potential emergency medical expenses.

  • Is my living situation suitable? Do you have a securely fenced yard? Does your landlord allow pets? Is your home safe for a curious puppy?

  • Are all family members on board? Bringing a dog home should be a family decision with everyone committed to caring for the new addition.

  • Am I prepared for the long-term commitment? Golden retrievers typically live 10-14 years. Are you ready for that level of commitment?

Golden Retriever Characteristics to Consider:

  • High energy levels requiring daily exercise

  • Significant shedding (invest in a good vacuum!)

  • Friendly temperament means they are not good guard dogs

  • Prone to certain health conditions requiring veterinary attention

  • Need for companionship – they do not do well left alone for long hours

  • Enthusiasm for life that can sometimes be overwhelming for very young children or elderly individuals

If you have done your research and believe a golden retriever is right for you, you are ready for Step 2.

STEP 2: COMPLETE THE ADOPTION APPLICATION

The next step is to complete our detailed adoption application. This application helps us get to know you, understand your lifestyle, and determine whether Golden Paws Home is the right breeder for you.

Our application asks about:

  • Your personal information and living situation

  • Your experience with dogs, particularly golden retrievers

  • Your family composition (adults, children, other pets)

  • Your expectations for your new puppy

  • Your plans for training, exercise, and veterinary care

  • Your understanding of the breed and commitment required

We take applications seriously and read every one carefully. Please be honest and thorough in your responses – there are no right or wrong answers, but honesty helps us serve you better.

Application Review Time: We typically review applications within 1to 2 business days and will contact you with any questions or to approve your application for the waitlist.

STEP 3: JOIN THE MASTER WAITLIST

Once your application is approved, you will be invited to join our Master Waitlist. Joining the waitlist requires a Refundable reservation fee of $300. This fee:

  • Secures your place in line for puppy selection

  • Demonstrates your serious commitment to adopting from us

  • Goes toward your puppy’s total purchase price of $750

  • Includes you in all litter announcements and updates

Waitlist Position: Your position on the waitlist is determined by the date we receive your completed application AND reservation fee. Early applications receive priority.

What the Waitlist Provides:

  • First access to information about new litters

  • Priority consideration during puppy selection

  • Regular updates on upcoming and current litters

  • Invitations to visit and meet available puppies

STEP 4: LITTER ANNOUNCEMENTS AND UPDATES

When we plan a litter, all families on our Master Waitlist receive advance notice. When a litter is born, we send another announcement with details about the puppies, photos, and estimated availability dates.

During the first 8 weeks, we provide:

  • Weekly photo updates showing the puppies’ growth

  • Videos capturing their developing personalities

  • Information about their milestones and achievements

  • Updates on health checks and veterinary care

This is an exciting time as you watch the puppies grow and begin to imagine which one might join your family!

STEP 5: PUPPY SELECTION AND MATCHING

At approximately 5-6 weeks of age, we begin the puppy selection process. This is when we match available puppies with approved families.

How Matching Works:

  1. Families are contacted in waitlist order for a consultation

  2. We discuss your preferences, lifestyle, and what you are looking for in a puppy

  3. We share our observations about each puppy’s temperament and personality

  4. Together, we identify the best potential matches

  5. You have the opportunity to visit (in person or via video) and meet potential matches

  6. Once a match is confirmed, that puppy is reserved for your family

Important Notes About Matching:

  • We do not allow families to simply “pick” a puppy without consultation – our matching process ensures better outcomes for everyone

  • If no puppy in the current litter is a good match for your family, you may maintain your waitlist position for a future litter

  • We consider both your preferences and what we know about each puppy’s needs

STEP 6: PREPARE FOR YOUR PUPPY’S ARRIVAL

Once your puppy is reserved, the real fun begins – preparing for their arrival! We provide comprehensive guidance to help you get ready.

Preparation Checklist:

  • Puppy-proof your home (secure cords, remove toxic plants, block off dangerous areas)

  • Purchase essential supplies (crate, bedding, food and water bowls, collar and leash, toys, grooming tools)

  • Select a veterinarian and schedule an initial wellness visit

  • Research puppy training classes and enroll in advance

  • Prepare family members, especially children, for the new arrival

  • Stock up on the food your puppy is currently eating (we provide samples and brand information)

We provide:

  • Detailed puppy preparation guide

  • Recommended supplies list with our favorite products

  • Information about puppy development and what to expect

  • Training resources and recommendations

  • 24/7 access to answer questions as they arise

STEP 7: PUPPY PICKUP DAY – WELCOME HOME!

The day has finally arrived – it is time to bring your puppy home! Puppies are available to go home at a minimum of 8 weeks of age, after they have received their first vaccinations and have been fully evaluated by our veterinarian.

ADOPTION PROCESS FAQs

Q: How long is the typical wait for a puppy?
A: Wait times vary depending on demand and litter availability. Currently, our waitlist is approximately 6-12 months. We encourage families to apply early and be patient – good things come to those who wait!

Q: Can I get my reservation fee back if I change my mind?
A: The reservation fee is non-refundable, which is why we encourage families to be certain of their commitment before joining the waitlist. In rare circumstances where no suitable puppy becomes available within one year, we may discuss options at our discretion.

Q: Do you allow visits before puppies are born?
A: We welcome visits by appointment to meet our adult dogs and see our facility. This helps you get to know us and our program before committing to a puppy.

Q: What if I am not a good match for any puppy in a litter?
A: You maintain your waitlist position for future litters. We would rather you wait for the right puppy than take one that is not a good fit for your family.

Q: Do you have a contract?
A: Yes! All adoptions include a comprehensive contract covering health guarantees, spay/neuter requirements (for pet puppies), and our return policy. We encourage you to read it carefully before signing.

Q: Can I choose my puppy’s name?
A: Absolutely! We use temporary names for identification, but your puppy will quickly learn whatever name you choose for them.
