About us

Our Story – The Heart Behind Golden Paws Home

OUR BEGINNING

Every great love story has a beginning, and ours started many years ago with a golden retriever named Sunshine. I was just seven years old when my parents brought home a fluffy, golden ball of energy who would become my best friend, my protector, and my introduction to the magic of this incredible breed. Sunshine lived to be fourteen years old, and in those fourteen years, she taught me more about loyalty, patience, unconditional love, and joy than any human ever could.

That childhood bond planted a seed that would grow for decades. Throughout my career in education and my journey raising a family of my own, I always had golden retrievers by my side. Each one brought their own unique personality, their own special gifts, and their own immeasurable contributions to our family’s happiness. But it wasn’t until our children were grown and we found ourselves with more time and space that the dream of Golden Paws Home truly took shape.

My husband and I had always talked about wanting to share the gift of golden retrievers with more families. We had the land, the experience, and most importantly, the passion. In 2018, we made the decision to transform our dream into reality. We converted a portion of our property into a safe, nurturing environment for breeding dogs and their puppies. We spent months researching breeding practices, health testing protocols, and early socialization techniques. We connected with experienced breeders who mentored us and shared their wisdom. We invested in quality breeding stock with exceptional pedigrees and proven health clearances.

When our very first litter was born in the spring of 2019, we sat up all night watching over that beautiful mother and her tiny puppies, and we cried tears of pure joy. In that moment, we knew that we had found our true purpose. Golden Paws Home was officially born, and we have never looked back.

Today, we are proud to be known as one of the most trusted golden retriever breeders in our region. We have placed puppies with families across the country, and we stay in touch with so many of them, watching their golden babies grow up through photos, videos, and heartwarming updates. Our reputation has been built on honesty, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to doing what is right for our dogs and the families who love them.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

At Golden Paws Home, we operate on a simple but powerful philosophy: raise every puppy as if they were staying with us forever, and place every puppy with the family that will love them best.

This philosophy guides every decision we make, from which dogs we choose to breed to how we match puppies with their forever families. It means that we never rush, never cut corners, and never compromise on the things that matter most – health, temperament, and the lifelong happiness of both puppies and their people.

We believe that responsible breeding is about so much more than producing puppies. It is about preserving and improving the golden retriever breed for future generations. It is about honoring the trust that families place in us when they choose one of our puppies. It is about being stewards of these magnificent animals and ensuring that each puppy we bring into the world has the best possible chance at a long, healthy, happy life.

We also believe in education. Part of our mission is to help families understand what it truly means to welcome a golden retriever into their lives. These dogs are not accessories or impulse purchases – they are living beings who will depend on you for everything for ten to fourteen years or more. We take the time to ensure that every family who adopts from us is fully prepared for the commitment, the joy, the challenges, and the incredible rewards of life with a golden.

OUR HOME AND FACILITY

Golden Paws Home is located on five beautiful acres in the rolling hills of [Your County/Region]. Our property features a spacious farmhouse where our family lives and where our dogs are truly part of daily life. We also have dedicated spaces designed specifically for the comfort and safety of our breeding dogs and puppies.

The Whelping Room:
When a mother is ready to deliver her puppies, she moves into our specially designed whelping room. This quiet, temperature-controlled space provides a safe, comfortable environment for birth and the first few weeks of life. It is equipped with a professional whelping box with safety rails to prevent accidental injuries, heating elements to keep newborns warm, and a camera system that allows us to monitor mother and puppies around the clock without disturbing them.

The Puppy Nursery:
As puppies grow and become mobile, they transition to our puppy nursery – a bright, cheerful room filled with age-appropriate toys, climbing structures, and different textures to explore. This is where early socialization begins in earnest. Puppies are introduced to various surfaces (carpet, tile, grass, wood chips), sounds (doorbells, vacuums, children laughing), and experiences (gentle handling, nail trims, car rides) that build confidence and prepare them for life in the real world.

The Play Yard:
Weather permitting, our puppies and adult dogs enjoy supervised time in our large, securely fenced play yard. With plenty of space to run, romp, and explore, this is where puppies learn important social skills from their mother and other trusted adult dogs. It is also where they experience grass, sunshine, fresh air, and all the wonderful sights and smells of the outdoors.

Family Living Areas:
Perhaps most importantly, our dogs and puppies spend significant time in our actual living spaces – our kitchen, our family room, and our backyard. They are part of everything we do, from morning coffee to evening movies to weekend barbecues with friends and family. This constant exposure to normal family life is what sets our puppies apart and makes them so adaptable when they join your home.

OUR BREEDING PROGRAM

Our breeding program is built on three pillars: Health, Temperament, and Conformation.

Health:
Before any dog is considered for breeding, they must pass an extensive battery of health tests. This includes:

  • OFA Hip Evaluation (excellent or good rating required)

  • OFA Elbow Evaluation (normal rating required)

  • OFA Cardiac Evaluation (normal rating required)

  • OFA Eye Certification renewed annually by a boarded veterinary ophthalmologist

  • Genetic testing for ichthyosis, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and other breed-specific conditions

  • Full veterinary examinations and vaccinations

We maintain complete health records for every dog and are happy to share results with prospective families. We also participate in ongoing research through the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, contributing to the long-term health of the breed.

Temperament:
A golden retriever’s temperament is its most precious asset. We evaluate our dogs not just on paper, but in real life. How do they interact with children? With strangers? With other dogs? Are they confident without being aggressive? Calm without being lazy? Playful without being hyperactive? We observe our dogs constantly and select breeding pairs who exemplify the very best of the breed standard – friendly, intelligent, eager to please, and wonderfully patient.

Conformation:
While we are not a show kennel, we do pay close attention to conformation – the physical structure of our dogs. A well-built golden retriever is not just beautiful to look at; it is a dog who can move freely, play actively, and live comfortably without physical limitations. We look for correct proportions, good angles, proper coat texture, and the overall balance that characterizes a quality golden retriever.

Limited Breeding Program:
We intentionally keep our breeding program small. Most years, we plan only one or two litters. This allows us to give each litter our complete attention and ensures that every puppy receives the individualized care and socialization they deserve. It also means that demand for our puppies consistently exceeds supply, which is why we maintain a Master Waitlist and encourage families to apply early.

MEET OUR BREEDING DOGS

Maple – Our Beloved Dam

Maple is the heart and soul of Golden Paws Home. Born on March 12, 2019, she came to us from a respected breeder in [State] and immediately stole our hearts with her sweet, gentle nature. Maple is a classic cream-colored golden retriever with a gorgeous coat, a perpetually wagging tail, and the most expressive brown eyes you have ever seen.

Health Clearances:

  • OFA Hips: Good

  • OFA Elbows: Normal

  • OFA Cardiac: Normal

  • Eyes: Certified Annually (Normal)

  • Genetic Testing: Clear all panels

Temperament:
Maple is the epitome of what a golden retriever should be. She is patient beyond measure with our grandchildren, welcoming to every visitor who comes to our door, and devoted to our family in a way that brings tears to our eyes. She loves nothing more than curling up at our feet while we read or watching over her puppies with fierce maternal devotion. Maple has had two litters with us and has been an exemplary mother both times – attentive, gentle, and so very proud of her babies.

Oak – Our Resident Sire

Oak joined our family in 2020 and has been making us laugh every single day since. Born on July 4, 2019, Oak is a classic red golden retriever with a rich, dark coat and a personality as big as his heart. Where Maple is calm and gentle, Oak is playful and mischievous – he keeps us on our toes and fills our home with joy.

Health Clearances:

  • OFA Hips: Excellent

  • OFA Elbows: Normal

  • OFA Cardiac: Normal

  • Eyes: Certified Annually (Normal)

  • Genetic Testing: Clear all panels

Temperament:
Oak is proof that you can have excellent health testing and still be the life of the party. He adores everyone he meets and has never met a game of fetch he didn’t want to play. Despite his playful nature, Oak is also incredibly intuitive – he seems to know when someone needs extra comfort and will quietly rest his head in their lap with perfect timing. He has sired two litters and his puppies consistently inherit his joyful spirit and beautiful coloring.

Future Breeding Prospects:
We occasionally keep a puppy from exceptional litters to evaluate as future breeding stock. These dogs are raised with the same love and care as all our puppies and are only bred if they meet our strict criteria for health, temperament, and conformation. Any puppy placed as a pet is sold on a limited registration with a spay/neuter contract to protect the integrity of our breeding program.

OUR COMMITMENT TO FAMILIES

When you adopt a puppy from Golden Paws Home, you are making a commitment to love and care for that dog for its entire life. We believe that commitment should be mutual. Here is what we promise to every family who welcomes one of our puppies:

Lifetime Support:
You will never be alone in your journey with your golden. We are always just a phone call, text, or email away. Whether you have questions about training, health concerns, or just want to share a cute photo, we are here for you. We genuinely love hearing from our families and watching our puppies grow up through your eyes.

Health Guarantee:
We stand behind the health of our puppies. Every puppy comes with a comprehensive written health guarantee that covers genetic conditions. We require that you take your puppy to a licensed veterinarian within 72 hours of adoption for verification of health. Our guarantee is straightforward, fair, and designed to protect both you and your new family member.

Lifetime Return Policy:
If at any point in your dog’s life you find yourself unable to care for them – whether due to life changes, financial circumstances, or any other reason – we require that the dog be returned to us, no questions asked. Our puppies are always welcome back at Golden Paws Home. We will never allow one of our dogs to end up in a shelter or rescue situation.

Educational Resources:
We provide each family with a comprehensive puppy packet that includes health records, feeding guidelines, training tips, and important information about the first few weeks at home. We also maintain a resource library on our website with articles on topics ranging from house training to nutrition to golden retriever specific health concerns.

Community Connection:
Our families become part of the Golden Paws Home community. We host occasional reunions where families can gather, share stories, and watch their goldens play together. We also have a private Facebook group where families connect, share photos, and support one another through the joys and challenges of life with a golden retriever.

OUR VALUES

Integrity: We are honest and transparent in everything we do. Our health testing is available for review. Our contracts are clear and fair. Our pricing is straightforward. We never make promises we cannot keep.

Compassion: We treat every dog in our care with kindness and respect. They are not commodities – they are family members who trust us to provide for their physical and emotional well-being.

Excellence: We are committed to continuous improvement. We stay current with advances in veterinary medicine, canine nutrition, and early socialization techniques. We learn from every litter and strive to make each one better than the last.

Community: We believe in the power of connection – between dogs and people, between families who share the joy of goldens, and between breeders working together to preserve and protect this magnificent breed.

Stewardship: We are temporary caretakers of the golden retriever breed. It is our responsibility to leave it better than we found it for future generations to enjoy.

WHY GOLDEN RETRIEVERS

We are often asked why we chose golden retrievers specifically. The answer is simple: there is no other breed like them.

Golden retrievers were developed in Scotland in the late 19th century by Lord Tweedmouth, who sought to create the ultimate hunting companion – a dog with a soft mouth for retrieving game, intelligence for following commands, and a gentle disposition suitable for family life. The breed was an instant success and has remained one of the world’s most beloved breeds ever since.

What makes goldens so special? It is their unique combination of traits:

Intelligence: Goldens are consistently ranked among the most intelligent dog breeds. They are eager to learn, quick to understand, and responsive to training. This makes them not only wonderful family companions but also exceptional service dogs, therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, and working dogs of all kinds.

Temperament: The golden retriever temperament is legendary. These dogs are friendly without being aggressive, playful without being hyperactive, and protective without being possessive. They are famously good with children, tolerant of other pets, and welcoming to strangers – they genuinely believe everyone they meet is a friend they haven’t made yet.

Adaptability: Goldens are remarkably adaptable dogs. They can thrive in apartments with sufficient exercise or on large rural properties. They are happy to accompany you on hiking adventures or to curl up for a quiet evening at home. They adjust to your lifestyle as long as they are with you.

Loyalty: A golden retriever’s loyalty knows no bounds. Once you have earned their love – which happens approximately thirty seconds after meeting them – they will be devoted to you for life. They want nothing more than to be with you, to please you, and to share every moment of your day.

Joy: Perhaps most importantly, golden retrievers bring joy. They greet each day with enthusiasm, each person with warmth, and each experience with wonder. They remind us to appreciate simple pleasures – a game of fetch, a belly rub, a walk in the sunshine. Living with a golden means laughing more, worrying less, and loving more deeply.
